BARB'S BLOG Every new year brings out the traditional cleaning out and throwing away of old files. As I was accomplishing this arduous task, I found the Edmond Chamber of Commerce promotional description used around the early 1980's. It described itself as a "sleepy college town with a population of 20,000". The growth of Edmond over the past 10 years alone has been amazing. It is now a bustling city with a population near 80,000. I attended a meeting with one of the Edmond City Planning Commissioners not too long ago and heard about their plans for Edmond including improving downtown Edmond, housing projections and commuter planning. Their plans and promotions for the city impressed me then and I am still impressed with their accomplishments. Although traffic at 2nd and Bryant is a problem, most commuters have an easy time of it. Tinker Air Force Base is only 19 miles away and with the Kilpatrick Turnpike, commuting to Oklahoma City is usually no more than a 15 minute ride. Although Edmond has most everything one good want. I remember when the only place to eat or take clients to lunch was Goldies on Broadway(still a good hamburger!) or fast food places. Now, there are many really good restaurants to actually sit down and eat something delicious! Central State College has grown into University of Central Okahoma and Oklahoma Christian College has taken a path of steady improvement and recognition. Single family homes have increased because of the demand for the wonderful Edmond school system. In 1996 there were 539 homes with an average cost of $175,600 and in 2005 there are nearly 700 homes with an average cost of $279,600. Obviously a good environment and investment. Again, good leadership and planning has been the basis for all of this. Good job!

First Time Buyers >Finding A Real Estate Agent
Finding an experienced, reliable real estate agent whom you like and trust is the first step in locating your new home. Here is an approach to finding the right agent.
Call or stop by a real estate office and ask to speak with the manager. Describe the type of home you are looking for. The manager can refer you to an agent who knows that market very well. You might also use weekend "open houses" as opportunities to look for a real estate agent, as well as a new home. It is really a matter of chemistry! If you meet someone who is knowledgeable and with whom you feel comfortable, call that person!
Once you establish a strong working relationship with a real estate agent, your agent can show you a number of homes for sale, even if they are listed with other companies. Often the agent can show you a property as soon as it is placed on the market. Many of the best homes never even make it to the weekend classified section of the newspaper!
